Will Texas Change It's High School Athletes Steroid Testing Program?

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

Is the economy affecting the way Texas is looking at the state's mandatory steriod testing program? According to a report in the Houston Chronicle, there is debate over whether to maintain the $3 million a year program at its current level. In the first two years of testing, only 11-students tested positive...out of the 29,000 tested.

It's my opinion that the testing program seems to be working and is a great deterrent to anyone that might be considering using steroids. I sure hope that budget deficits aren't the overriding factor in this case.

2003 EA Sports Elite Quarterback Fail to Shine

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

With the NFL Draft just one week away, I found a very interesting article by reporter Charean Williams of the Star-Telegram in Fort Worth, Texas.

Williams examines the college careers of former 2003 Texas high school football star quarterbacks Kirby Freeman (Brownwood HS) and Bobby Reid (Galena Park North Shore). Neither player was able to follow-up their high school success at the next level.

At the end of the story, the reporter adds a chart showing how Freeman and Reid and the 10 other quarterbacks invited to EA Sports Elite 11 Camp in 2003 fared in college.

The morale of the story..."blue chip recruiting is not an exact science."

by Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

The proliferation of big interstate high school football games will continue in 2009. Two-time defending Texas 5A champ Katy will host Washington state football power Bellevue on Saturday, September 12.

Bellevue has won six of the last eight 3A Washington state football championships, and is best known as the team that snapped De La Salle's record 151-game win streak. In addition to winning back-to-back 5A titles, Katy has played in the title game four of the last six years.
